Turn on maker-checker

The Payroll controls switches and what each one stops.

Maker-checker means a second person must act before a payroll step takes effect. In Vintage People it is your choice. Many organisations have one payroll user, so every control is off by default: the step happens at once and is recorded with the name of the person who did it. When you have the people to separate duties, switch the controls on.

Open Payroll setup, Payroll policy and find the Payroll controls card. The same switches are on Settings, Governance controls. They can be changed only there, never through general settings, and changing one emails every user.

Each switch stops something specific. One adds an audit step before a run can be approved. Payroll approved by a different user stops whoever ran or audited payroll from approving it. Second person approves payment batches stops the creator of a batch from approving it. Second person approves bank-detail changes holds every change to where someone is paid under Payroll, Bank changes until a different person approves it, and nobody can approve a change to their own salary account.

The correction switches turn deleting an unapproved run, reopening a period and rolling a period back into requests that someone else approves, and you can choose whether everyone is emailed when they happen. There is also a switch for overtime.

With a control on, a requester never approves their own request, and the audit log shows who did each step. Whatever you set, only an unapproved run can be deleted. To correct an approved run, reopen its period.
